Originally, there was a small lawn on the upper terrace and parkway strip but they had reverted to mostly weeds and were completely overgrown. The middle terrace and small bed in front of the rockery were also weed infested. All undesirable plants were carefully removed and the soil reconditioned by copious amounts of organic compost and fertilizer. To lower water usage and bring maintenance down, ground cover replaced lawns. An emphasis on colorful and textual foliage creates interest during all seasons.
